Native to India, parts of Africa and Southern Europe, Ashwagandha is a revered herb in many cultures. It is a popular ayurvedic adaptogenic herb which not only means “horse smell” in sanskrit but is also supposed to give the energy of a horse to those that work with it. Ashwagandha is most typically taken to balance the nervous system and promote healthy energy levels during times of stress.
Ashwagandha prefers a hot climate where it can thrive as a perennial. Here in the Pacific Northwest it happily grows as an annual. We harvest this pleasantly odoriferous root in the fall when the plant is ripe with red berries and the leaves begin to turn yellow. The berries and yellowing leaves signify that the energy is returning to the roots and therefore is the ideal time to harvest.
